Scalar Wave Paintings
The paintings emit frequencies that look white to the naked eye, but take on random, fluctuating colors when viewed through a digital camera. Each photograph of the same image will look different. This changes the 1:1 relationship between image and object that is central to traditional thinking about representation, art, and technology.

Statement
How It Works
The surface, materials, and lights interact to emit scalar frequencies through quantum effects on ambient light. This experience is impacted by, and impacts, viewers in the immediate vicinity, and also globally through networked systems.
Inception
I was inspired to create the work during the lockdowns in NYC, when I realized that art is something that should be seen in person. I developed the technical concept with the assistance of PhDs in visual science at RIT.
Inspiring Dialog
These works propose a new dialog about the relationship between technology and culture, one in which there is no central reference point, because each photograph of the same physical painting will look different. This highlights the mostly unexplored of logic, thinking, and preconception involved in our everyday appreciation of things. The intent is to elevate individual and group dialog, perception, and engagement.
Public Engagement
A live Internet feed of the paintings on view in a physical space will show the scalar wave effect and how it is impacted by, and impacts the public with technology as a medium. The paintings will look white to the live viewers, who will be encouraged to view them through a digital camera and then share the work. Sharing the work will generate additional energy that will further transform the visual appearance of the works.
